All new members of Girl Guides will need to complete a challenge before taking their promise and being formally enrolled as a member. Here is some information new members need to know before getting enrolled. Your adult leader will help you to understand the requirements and sign up the clauses as you complete them.

Teddy enrolment

Teddies

A Teddy must be aged between four years and six: months and seven years of age and must have attended four Teddy meetings.

In preparation for her enrolment, the Teddy has to know her own:

  • Name and surname
  • Birthday
  • Address
  • Age
  • Telephone number

Once the Teddy has completed the requirements, she must then make her Teddy Promise. This is usually done at a special ceremony during a Teddy meeting and the Teddy must wear her formal uniform.

Brownie enrolment

Brownies

A Brownie must be aged between seven years and ten years of age and must have attended four Brownie meetings.

Prior to being enrolled, a prospective Brownie, known as a Tweenie, should:

  • Know the Brownie Promise
  • Know the Brownie Law
  • Know the Brownie Motto
  • Know the Brownie Salute and Handshake
  • Know the meaning of a Smile and Good Turn
  • Have taken part in the Pow-Wow Ring
  • Have been told 1 of the South African Brownie stories

Once the Tweenie has completed the requirements, she must then make her Brownie Promise. This is usually done at a special ceremony during a Teddy meeting and the Brownie must wear her formal uniform.

Guide enrolment

Guides

A Guide must be aged between ten years and fourteen years of age and must have attended two weekly Guide meetings.

Prior to being enrolled, a prospective Guide should:

  • Know and understand the Guide Promise
  • Know and understand the Guide Law
  • Know and understand the Guide Salute, left handshake and whistle signals
  • Know and understand the Guide Motto
  • Understand the meaning of the Good Turn and put it into practice
  • Have been told something of Scouting and Guiding started; know the names of the founder and Chief Guide; the date and meaning of Thinking Day
  • Describe the World Flag and know something of the symbolism of the flag
  • Know the names of the other members of the Patrol, Guider, the name of the Company, District and Region.

Once the Guide has completed the requirements, she must then make her Guide Promise. This is usually done at a special ceremony during a Guide meeting and the Guide must wear her formal uniform.

Ranger investiture

Rangers

A Ranger must be aged between fourteen years and eighteen years of age and must have attended two consecutive meetings if linking up from Guides or four consecutive meetings if not previously a Guide.

Before being invested, a Ranger would need to work through her first challenge, the Ranger Trefoil Challenge

  • Know something of the history of the Girl Guide Movement, the extent of Guiding throughout the world and understand how Guiding is administered in your area OR hold the Guide Link Badge
  • Be willing to make or renew your Promise. Show that you understand the commitment you are making. Know the Guide Laws and show that you are practising them in your life
  • Understand the Ranger Programme and know how the committee system works in your crew

Once the Ranger has completed the requirements, she must then make her Ranger Promise. This is usually done at a special ceremony during a Ranger meeting and the Ranger must wear her formal uniform.
